History of the Horse Races at Charles Town

Opened in 1933, the races at Charles Town have seen and made history over and over. Originally built by Albert and Joseph Boyle on a hunch that crowds would flock to a winter race meet even in frigid temperatures: they were right. In 1969, Barbara Jo Rubin became the first woman to win a pari-mutuel race in the United States when she won at Charles Tow. Though attendance and handle dwindled to near disastrous levels in the mid-1990s, the facility was renovated and a world class entertainment facility was added including over 3,500 slot machines and more than 100 table tables.

About the Charles Town Horse Racing Track Surface

The stable area is home to approximately 1,350 stalls in 20 barns, including a 44 stall receiving barn. The track itself is a ¾ mile dirt oval with 4½ and 7 furlong chutes.
