Workshop

  • Once you have access to the Hunter's Dream, you can approach the Workbench in the Workshop and interact to upgrade your weapons. You'll need Blood Echoes and Blood Stones. Select 'Fortify' from the menu to begin upgrading. This is the single most important aspect of character progression, so choose wisely when spending Blood Stones. There are four levels of Blood Stone: Blood Stone Shards, Twin Blood Stone Shards, Blood Stone Chunks, and Blood Rocks.

  • Weapons can be upgraded to a maximum of +10 using Blood Stone Shard (+1 through +3), Twin Blood Stone Shards (+4 through +6), Blood Stone Chunk (+7 through +9) and Blood Rock for +10.

  • In addition to normal weapon upgrades using Blood Echoes and materials, you can also take Blood Gems earned mainly by defeating enemies to strengthen your weapons and add special characteristics. Once you've obtained Blood Gem Workshop Tool, you'll be able to attach Blood Gems to your weapons and benefit from their effects.

  • Blood Gems are rare items that give various boosts or bonuses to weapons, such as HP recovery or adding elemental damage. Most weapons have three slots for gems, and gem slots are unlocked by upgrading the weapon. Gem slots have specific shapes that only accept compatible gem shapes. Blood gems are reusable, and can be transferred from one weapon to another.

Blood Gems

  • In order to attach gems to your weapons, you'll need three things. First, you'll need a gem. Second, you'll need a weapon that can equip a gem; this means you'll need to upgrade your weapon to unlock gem slots. Finally, you'll need the Blood Gem Workshop Tool. It can be obtained just before entering Oedon Chapel in Central Yharnam. With those elements in place, you can attach gems to your weapon by approaching the workbench in the Hunter's Dream and selecting 'Blood Gem Fortification.' More details for individual effects can be found in Gem Effects page.

Ritual Materials

  • Basic and Rite crafting materials can be found mainly in the Chalice Labyrinths from loot chests or enemy drops, with the rarer ones required to craft specific labyrinths also found in the main quest. Progressing though the game, acquiring Hunter Badges, defeating bosses and clearing labyrinths will also unlock certain Basic Materials in both Bath Messenger Blood Echoes and Insight shops in the Hunter's Dream. Ritual Blood and Tomb Mold basic materials have a numerical value in brackets next to them. These correspond to the depth/difficulty of a labyrinth, and can also be found on the same depth or one depth below. The highest level of both of these items (5), can be purchased from Bath Messengers since Patch v1.07 (NG+).

Inspired by From Software’s Dark Souls games, Bloodborne casts players as a hunter exploring the diseased city of Yharnam, battling a variety of monsters using a cutting weapon in one hand and a firearm in the other. Fans of the Dark Souls franchise will find several aspects to this title familiar, like saving one’s progress, general controls and the overal user interface. That said, the heavy emphasis on offensive attacks versus defense makes it somewhat easier for newcomers. This Bloodborne guide and walkthrough takes you through the game from start to finish so you can find all of the collectibles, take down bosses and even make your way through The Old Hunters DLC.

Bloodborne Quick Tips

  • Hunter’s Dream is a safe haven with no enemies. You’re free to store items, tweak your character and weapons. Although you will visit this place upon your first death, ideally you should reach it by activating the Central Yharnam lamp, which grants access to multiple features.
  • The Bath Messenger buys and sells a variety of useful items. You buy things in Bloodborne using Blood Echoes.
  • When you have enough Blood Echoes, interact with the doll in Hunter’s Dream to level up your character.
  • You drop all Blood Echoes, the game’s currency, when you die. Both you and enemies can retrieve them. Should a monster pick them up first, search for a creature with glowing purple eyes.
  • Light lamps to return to Hunter’s Dream. Doing this, however, will cause some defeated monsters to re-appear; Hunters and bosses will not respawn.
  • Fight bosses to earn Insight that you can use to unlock additional features in Hunter’s Dream.
  • If you see a white flame over a corpse or defeated foe, this means you can pick up an item.
  • Throw pebbles to distract a creature, which is a great strategy for separating it from a group. If you prefer something more dramatic, toss a Molotov Cocktail.
  • When you see doors with red lanterns, you can speak to someone to potentially receive helpful tips, items, or a bonus objective in the game.
  • Use your hunter’s firearm interrupt a monster's attack and stun it, then attack with the melee weapon. Make sure you have a target lock and it's easier if you're not standing on uneven ground when using a gun.
  • Walk slowly to use stealth to surprise unaware monsters with a powerful Charge Attack.
  • Change your cutting weapon from short to long form by pressing L1. The former allows for faster attacks, while the latter inflicts more damage.
  • Press and hold R2 to charge up an attack. Your hunter will hit the targeted enemy with a Charge Attack that temporarily stuns the monster if landed from behind. You must completely charge this ability to pull off a Charge Attack. Otherwise you will not stun the enemy.
  • Kill werewolves in Central Yharnam for unlimited Blood Echoes. We have step-by-step instructions how to loot farm.
